So, this was something to wake up to. My friend Kay Ulanday Barrett had posted on their site that they had been one of “9 Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Writers You Should Know” in Vogue. I wrote a big congratulations–and then they said I was one of the nine, as well. So gosh! Wow!
One quick note–initially, the article called me a “Hawaiian Writer.” I corrected them on that quickly. The Hawaiian people have their own writers and stories and history of marginalization. Although my family has deep roots in Hawaii, we came from Japan as immigrants. I am a Japanese American, and a Japanese-American writer.
