UC Irvine, January 24 the 30th Annual Asian Pacific American Awareness Conference at UC Irvine.

Community, Readings and Events / Tuesday, November 18th, 2014
I have just accepted a Keynote Speaker Invitation to the 30th Annual Asian Pacific American Awareness Conference at UC Irvine.

I am very excited about this event! yay! I have performed and spoken at many queer events, but I am Asian American, as well. And I have many mixed thoughts on Asian Americans, families, communities. On one hand, yes, they hold so much of our identities, our familiar foods and songs. They are sources of pride and stability. On the other hand, they can be inflexible, unjust, dismissive and abusive to those who do not fit in. It is as if, to become accepted, to make no noise, to make no waves, many Asian families abhor deviance, social, sexual, or otherwise.

I do have much to say here. IMHO, the AAPI communities have much to answer for–and much to learn and gain. LGBT and queer people should not think of returning to their communities, but to bring their communities with them. This is not easy, but it is the only path that validates their experiences and growth.
