Untangling the Knot with Carter Sickels and Ooligan Press.

Last year, I was asked by the wonderful Carter Sickels to contribute an essay to his book Untangling the Knot: Queer Voices on Marriage, Relationships & Identity. (Ooligan Press)

I declined.

I had really nothing to say about marriage–I thought the whole marriage push, while admirable, was far from the most pressing issue to address. As many of you know, when I am not writing, I teach self defense to at-risk queer youth with the LA LGBT Center. It’s hard to think of marriage when listening and working with these youth.

Luckily, Carter asked again and when I told him my reservations, he said he trusted me and wanted me to write something, anyway. I am so glad he did, because the book looks great, and I cannot be happier with the essay I gave him. It is called “Sakura, Ayame, and a Cotton Judogi.” I hope you like it, and the other essays in this fantastic book.
